In the hospitality industry, I see every day just how much a genuine welcome can mean. People arrive, find peace and feel welcome. These moments leave a lasting impression not only on the guests, but on me as well. This is precisely the environment in which I work – and it is also where I find the foundation for my voluntary work.

What specific tasks does Callegen carry out for hotels?
Christian Kocura: Our main task is to ensure that hotels can be contacted reliably. We handle incoming calls and take bookings, thereby taking the pressure off the teams in their day-to-day operations – especially when every little bit helps.
How did your involvement with the ‘It’s for Kids’ charity come about?
Christian Kocura: Thanks to my close links with the industry, I have seen just how much potential there is in community spirit – not only in day-to-day operations, but also when it comes to social responsibility. Based on this realisation, I serve as a trustee for ‘It’s for Kids’, a charity that supports disadvantaged children through creative fundraising initiatives.
How can social engagement be easily integrated into day-to-day hotel operations, and how can hotels make a tangible contribution?
Christian Kocura: You don’t need a major campaign; impact often comes from simple, obvious ideas that fit into the day-to-day running of hotels. A clearly labelled dessert, a dish on the menu or voluntarily opting out of room cleaning – these are practical examples. In addition, we offer hotels the opportunity to donate lost property: items left behind are sent to us, we sell them in a transparent manner, and the proceeds go directly to children’s aid projects. In this way, supporting a good cause becomes a natural part of the guest experience.
Are there any specific examples that have proved successful?
Christian Kocura: At the b’mine Hotel in Düsseldorf, a special dessert ensures regular donations to ‘It’s for Kids’. Guests have responded very positively to this; many even order the dessert specifically because of the charity initiative. Opting out of room cleaning also triggers a donation. Both schemes are practical, transparent and are very well received by guests.
Are there any partnerships or further ideas relating to sustainability?
Christian Kocura: Yes, we focus on partnerships that combine the circular economy with social commitment. One example is our collaboration with SAPOCycle, where used soap scraps from hotels are recycled and distributed to those in need. We also work with the Bernise initiative. This creates a measurable impact for children and contributes to responsible business practices.
What would you like to see from hotels and the hospitality sector?
Christian Kocura: That they see social engagement as a practical part of their everyday lives – even on a small scale. Often, a simple idea is enough to make a real difference to disadvantaged children. It’s not about getting involved in a perfect or particularly grand way. What’s important is that the solution is tailored to the specific organisation and is operationally viable. That way, getting involved feels natural and right, very much in keeping with the spirit of hospitality.
About Christian:
Christian Kocura is married, has three children and lives in Leverkusen. He has been volunteering with the It’s for Kids Foundation for many years and coaches an Under-11 football team. After holding various roles in sales and key account management, as well as studying part-time at FOM, he took the plunge into self-employment. For the past nine years, he has been advising companies on customer service, customer communication and telephone availability. Through his work on numerous hotel projects, he has developed a particular affinity for the industry.
Conclusion:
Social engagement in the hotel and hospitality sector can be simple, pragmatic and economically sound. This is demonstrated by Christian Kocura, Managing Director of Callegen GmbH and trustee of ‘It’s for Kids’. The foundation is dedicated to supporting disadvantaged children in Germany. Hotels find straightforward ways to get involved, for example by offering charity desserts, waiving room cleaning fees or donating lost property, which is then sold centrally to raise funds for children’s charity projects. Through collaborations with partners such as SAPOCycle and Bernise, sustainable circular economy and social initiatives are brought together. The result: hotel operations and charitable commitment complement one another, guests appreciate the effort, and local children benefit demonstrably – all without any extra effort in day-to-day operations.
