With recyclable mattresses and a circular economy approach, Verena Judmayer and Michaela Stephen are setting new standards for environmentally friendly sleeping comfort in the hotel industry.

Sustainable dreams: How MATR is transforming the hotel industry

The hotel industry faces a major challenge: how can accommodation be made more sustainable without compromising on quality or the guest experience? MATR demonstrates that this is certainly possible when it comes to mattresses. With MATR, Verena Judmayer and Michaela Stephen have created a forward-thinking concept that is entirely based on the circular economy and sets new standards for sustainable hospitality.

MATR stands for high-quality, durable and fully recyclable mattresses – specially designed for innovative hotels that combine the highest level of sleeping comfort with a sustainable, transparent approach.

MATR was founded on the basis of personal conviction and a desire for genuine change – a start-up that brings the circular economy to the hospitality industry through recyclable mattresses and rethinks sustainability from the ground up.

MATR: Sleep with a Purpose – How an Idea is Revolutionising the Hotel Market

What inspired you to set up MATR?

Verena Judmayer: Every year, around 30 million mattresses end up in landfill sites or waste-to-energy plants across Europe, which poses a major waste problem and got us thinking. Why is there virtually no circular economy in the mattress industry? That question kept niggling at us. The turning point was the Circle17 Impacthon, an event for sustainable start-ups. It was there that Michaela and I came up with the idea for MATR, a mattress that not only ensures the best possible sleep comfort but also protects the environment. Our concept returns all materials to the cycle, because sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated – it can quite simply begin whilst you sleep.

What role did your personal background play in your decision to set up your own business?

Verena Judmayer: I grew up in a small village in Styria, surrounded by woods and meadows, because nature has always been an important part of my life. Even today, I spend a lot of my free time in the mountains and feel a great sense of responsibility to preserve them. At the same time, I was exposed to entrepreneurship from a young age when my father set up his own business – with all the challenges that entailed, but also the freedom to put his own ideas into practice. Even at primary school, I knew that one day I wanted to start my own business. I’ve also been shaped by the strong women in my life, above all my mother, who showed me that you can reach for the stars. It was clear to me that I wanted to set up a business that had a real purpose and made the world a little better – and that’s how MATR came into being.

What makes MATR unique compared to other companies?

Verena Judmayer: For us, sustainability is more than just a trend. Our mattresses are designed so that, at the end of their useful life, they do not end up as waste but can be fully recycled or reused. We focus on high-quality, durable materials and a business model that is not only environmentally friendly but also makes economic sense for hoteliers. Transparency is our top priority: our customers know exactly what our mattresses are made of and how the cycle works. Innovation, a genuine circular economy and authenticity are what define MATR.

About Verena Judmayer

Verena Judmayer is not only Co-CEO and co-founder of MATR, a multi-award-winning circular economy company based in Vienna – she is also a true pioneer when it comes to rethinking sustainable sleep. Together with Michaela Stephen, she has launched Austria’s first circular hotel mattress through MATR. Her aim: first-class sleeping comfort without waste, and all at excellent value for money.

MATR works with forward-thinking hotels that are already looking to the future – and offering their guests sustainable sleeping comfort. The Inara Suites, for example, demonstrate how a sustainable hospitality industry can already be a reality today: through circular solutions that combine environmental awareness with first-class comfort.

“MATR is more than just a mattress – it’s a philosophy. Their circular mattresses offer the ultimate in comfort, eliminate waste and represent the future of the hospitality industry. When building a hotel for the next generation, there’s only one right choice.” – Fabian Wiesler, Seehotel Wiesler & developer of Inara Suites
