In conversation with Ulrike Rabmer-Koller: The Ecowaterjet by rabmer as a solution to rising energy prices, water scarcity and the EU taxonomy

Sustainability in the hotel industry: How innovative technologies reduce costs and meet ESG requirements

Rising energy prices, increasing water shortages and strict ESG and EU taxonomy requirements are posing major challenges for hotels. But how can hotels cut costs, practise sustainability and delight guests all at the same time?
We spoke to Ulrike Rabmer-Koller about the innovative Ecowaterjet by rabmer – a small piece of technology with a big impact.

How the Ecowaterjet helps hotels save water and energy without compromising on showering comfort

Conserving resources through innovation: Ulrike Rabmer-Koller on the Ecowaterjet and sustainable hospitality

"For over 60 years, our mission has been to conserve resources through innovation"

Ms Rabmer-Koller, you have been a pioneer in the field of environmental technologies for many years. Why do you include the Ecowaterjet in your product range?

Ulrike Rabmer-Koller: For over 60 years, our mission at Rabmer has been to use innovative technologies to conserve resources and reduce costs, whilst meeting the highest quality standards. Water is one of the world’s most important resources – and its consumption plays a major role in the tourism sector in particular.
Whilst conventional water-saving shower heads or inserts do reduce water flow, they also compromise the showering experience – which in turn leads to an increase in guest complaints. With the Ecowaterjet, we offer a solution that saves up to 50 per cent of water and energy whilst showering, without compromising on the guests’ showering experience.

How it works: “Less water, more turbulence”

How exactly does the Ecowaterjet work?

Ulrike Rabmer-Koller: This innovative shower insert is simply screwed into place between the tap and the shower hose (or, in the case of overhead showers, directly in front of the shower head) – without having to replace the shower head. This is important to avoid unnecessary waste from old shower heads.
Thanks to the Venturi principle, a highly swirled water-air mixture is created, ensuring a powerful, pleasant shower jet – even though up to 50 per cent less water flows through. This means that hotels automatically save the energy that would otherwise be needed to heat water – and, after all, hot water is the second-largest contributor to energy consumption in the building.

“We didn’t want a budget product, but a premium product”

Hotels are often concerned that guests will be inconvenienced by water-saving measures in the shower. What has been your experience?

Ulrike Rabmer-Koller: I travel a great deal for work, and it really annoys me when the showerhead just drips. On the other hand, though, reducing resource consumption is important to me. That is precisely why we launched the Ecowaterjet. We didn’t want a ‘water-saving product’ with poor performance, but rather a premium product that would delight guests. The feedback has been very positive – guests don’t notice the difference, whilst hoteliers benefit from the savings. Our many customers worldwide are testament to the quality of the product.

Potential savings for hotels

Specifically, how much could hotels save?

Ulrike Rabmer-Koller: A 200-room hotel can save around 4 million litres of water and 150,000 kWh of energy per year. This not only translates into cost savings of between €26,000 and €40,000 per year, but also a reduction of over 45 tonnes of CO₂.

ESG & EU Taxonomy – measures that can be implemented immediately

What role does the Ecowaterjet play in relation to ESG and the EU taxonomy?

Ulrike Rabmer-Koller: Hotels face the challenge of demonstrably implementing their sustainability targets. According to the taxonomy, the water flow rate in showers must not exceed 8 litres per minute. With the Ecowaterjet, this can be reduced to 6 litres per minute whilst still ensuring the same showering comfort as with 12 litres. The Ecowaterjet is a simple measure that can be implemented immediately and contributes directly to the criteria of ESG and the EU taxonomy. It also enhances the hotel’s appeal to investors, guests and partners who are placing increasing value on sustainability.

Testimonials from the international hospitality sector

Where is the Ecowaterjet already being used successfully?

Ulrike Rabmer-Koller: We have clients ranging from boutique hotels to major hotel chains worldwide. We are particularly proud that renowned partners such as Marriott, Hilton, NH Hotels, Falkensteiner, Hipotels, Radisson, Adina Hotels, B’mine Hotels, Clayton Hotels, Alps Resorts and the Ritz-Carlton, amongst many others, rely on our innovative water-saving devices.

Vision: A global standard for sustainability

What is your vision for the future?

Ulrike Rabmer-Koller: My aim is for many hotels around the world to adopt the Ecowaterjet as the standard for sustainable water management. If we manage to halve water and energy consumption during showering in the hotel sector alone, we will be making a huge contribution to climate protection – without any loss of comfort or guest complaints.
